How to give yourself a spa facial at home
Facials are a wonderful way to relax and feel pampered, but they can also leave a sizable dent in your bank account. So why not put an hour or two aside in the weekend to treat yourself in the comfort of your own home?
Over the course of a year, doing your own facials could save up to $1500! It’s time to find some spa music on Spotify and get those pores clean!
Cleanse
Aside from being a great way to unwind and destress, a once-a-month facial has deep-cleansing benefits that result in clearer, more radiant-looking skin.
Begin by cleaning the canvas, because removing the build-up of dirt, oil and make-up lets the nutritious ingredients in the products you are about to use do their job. Find yourself a natural cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils. Our oil-based Mango + Apricot Sorbet Cleanser followed by the Apple Juice Foaming Cleanser are great options for a two-step cleanse. They are suitable for all skin types and designed to cleanse and protect your skin’s natural defence barrier.
When applying your product, take your time and gently massage from your chin up your face in small circular motions with two fingers. Wash off with warm water and a face cloth, then pat dry.
Exfoliate
The next step is to remove the dead skin cells that are hiding your skin’s radiance. Exfoliation also helps to even your skin tone and allow vitamin-packed products to be more easily absorbed. Look for a natural exfoliating scrub that isn’t filled with artificial ingredients that will irritate your skin. Our Bamboo Beads Face Scrub is 100% natural and loaded with nourishing ingredients that help to decongest blocked pores and remove dead skin cells without damaging your skin.
With wet hands, gently work the scrub around your face in small circles with your fingertips, avoiding the eye area. You don’t need to apply much pressure - the finely ground powder will be enough to polish away the dead skin cells. Rinse well with warm water.
Steam
By using steam, your pores will open up to release bacteria, sebum and other impurities. Steam also increases blood flow, which delivers oxygen and nutrients to your skin.
Bring a pot of water to boil (or put hot water in a sink). If you like, you can put a few drops of essential oils or some herbs in the water for an aromatherapy touch. Lean over the water into the steam with a large towel that covers the water, your head and shoulders. Don’t get too close - about 30cm will be fine. Stay there for 5-10 minutes.
Apply a mask
Your skin is now prepped for maximum absorption of a sumptuous face mask. There are many face masks available on the market, but we recommend you make your own mask at home with simple ingredients found in your kitchen, like banana, avocado, honey or cocoa. Check out our blog about making skin treatments with ingredients from your pantry and fridge.
When you have applied your mask, feel free to put a slice of cucumber on your eyes and lie back for 15 minutes. Enjoy the soothing effect on your eyes, while the face mask is working. This is a good time to enjoy a spa music track or listen to an audio book.
Tone
Once you have rinsed off the mask, your skin is ready for the next step - toner. This is to neutralise your skin’s pH balance and help even out skin tone. Again, natural is best - avoid toners with irritants like alcohol. A cost-effective toner packed with vitamins and nutrients is Cucumber + Lettuce Toner. It comes in a convenient spritzer bottle which feels refreshing on your skin and helps close your pores.
Serum
Next up is serum. There are many serums around, so pick one that you feel your skin needs. Rub a few drops between your hands, then gently press into your skin.
Moisturise
The final step is to moisturise. Depending on what time of day it is, you could use a daytime or evening moisturiser. Either way, use a natural product that isn’t filled with questionable ingredients that could be harmful to your skin. Keep it simple with Natural Vegetable Day Moisturiser or Natural Berry Night Moisturiser. Both are made with 100% natural ingredients and loaded with nutrients that leave your skin feeling hydrated and nourished.
When you apply the moisturiser, finish off your pampering with a gentle face massage to stimulate blood flow and help you relax. Facial done!
